Westlake received a visit from UT football coach, Mack Brown and offensive coordinator Greg Davis Jan. 23, surprising students and staff who recognized him in the halls.
“He wanted to visit with
the people who had helped make it
possible for Justin Tucker to attend the University of
Texas,” varsity football
coach Derek Long said. “It’s more than just
X’s and O’s, it’s more than just
winning football games—there’s a whole public
relations standpoint to doing
things in college football.”
Tucker, who graduated a semester
early to join the Longhorn
football team, signed on Feb. 6 in the video room.
Brown met with athletic personnel,
Dr. Wellman and the
counselors.
“It was very impressive
that he came to visit,” Tucker’s
former counselor Debbie Hicks said. “He wasn’t in a
hurry at all and everyone
just really enjoyed visiting with him.”
On Brown’s way out of the counseling office, one of his biggest fans, Amy Mansfield, a special needs student, spotted him. She was shaking and breathless with excitement as an enormous, bright smile broke across her face.
“He was the most exciting person I’ve ever met,” Amy said. “It was better than the Garth Brooks concert.”
