Winter Guard kicks off season, looks to improve ability

Jan. 23 marked the Winter Guard’s first competition of the 2010 season. As members, chaperones and supporters journeyed to Vista Ridge High School for a 5 p.m. performance, the group experienced a feeling of nerves and anticipation.

“We have all been practicing non-stop,” sophomore Rachel Felger said. “When it came time for our show, we knew we could do it.”

The large amount of rifle and swing flag work has given each member a lot to focus their energy on. With a Native American theme associated with the show’s plot, performing with body language and facial expressions was the main factor in catching the judges’ attention.

“After the show I had a chance to speak with the judges, and they all seemed to enjoy what we have so far,” Winter Guard coach Bryn Speer said. “Now, we are going to work on finishing everything up and fine tuning the details.”

Placing fourth at the Jan. 23 competition, the group can’t wait to move up in placement as they continue to practice morning and night. With their Feb. 6 competition looming in the future, the Winter Guard members are willing to give it everything they’ve got.

“It is time to really buckle down,” captain senior Robin Hellebreckers said.
