Techies and the Beast
The TEC members are maintaining their extremely busy lifestyle; some students are spending almost every day in the WCPAC after school building a set of epic proportions for the upcoming musical, Beauty and the Beast, on Feb 19 at 7:30 p.m. and 20 at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
“The set is 16 feet tall at its highest point,” junior Walker Jezek said.
Tech Theatre 3 students designed a castle, which includes a dungeon, Belle’s room, a library, a fireplace, a grand staircase, and the West Wing. There is also a tavern, Belle’s house, a forest and the village.
“To start we read the script countless times and then did hours of research trying to create at set that would work for the show,” junior Ashley Thornburg said. “All this research eventually turned into sketches and those sketches turned into ground plans and more detailed drawings. There were a few challenges we ran into throughout the process. One of them was that when you say Beauty and the Beast there is a picture that pops into your head and you expect to see that. Well, sadly that mental image isn’t possible most of the time. It is often too extravagant and quite frankly not realistic to put on a stage. So we, as the designers, had to work to create a set that came as close to that mental image as possible while still keeping it realistic.”
Tickets are going on sale to the public on Feb 8 and will be available weekdays in the Chap Court from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the PAC Lobby weekdays from 4 to 6 p.m. They will also be sold at the door one hour before each performance, if available.
This show will have some amazing special effects, including extensive pyrotechnics, confetti, streamers, and possibly levitating.
