Climbing to the top
The newest formed group at Westlake, the Mountain Biking Club is on its way up the mountain.
“I have two bikes, one from Toys R Us that I use recreationally and a Cannondale I use for triathlons,” sophomore Tess Hellebrekers said.
The group enjoys riding on trails rather than being watched as they ride on the street, so mountain biking was ideal. Also, having the ability to share their sport has brought this club together. Another favorite aspect of mountain biking is the freedom.
“My favorite thing about mountain biking is being out in the middle of nowhere and making my own path,” said sophomore Drew Nelson. “Also, I really enjoy just going out there and having fun with my friends with a little friendly competition.”
One of Drew’s favorite trails is Reimer’s Ranch near Dripping Springs. He likes the environmental challenge.
This club has been a long time in the making.
“Ben Williamson and I had been talking about starting this club ever since freshman year,” Drew said. “When we found out that Kristina Lackey was also starting a mountain biking club, we decided to combine the two clubs to make one big , mountain biking club.”
The group meets each month to plan their bike rides. Anyone interested in joining should contact Drew Nelson or Kristina Lackey.
