Blood raiser
On Feb.12, the Austin Blood Bank sponsored a blood drive in the Chap Court. Student Council organized this blood-raiser as they have done all year. At the end of the blood drive, there were 63 pints collected, amounting to about 350 total pints collected this year.
“There is usually an average of 60 to about 90 participants per drive,” Student Council Member Nikki Steimle said.
To be a donor at the blood drives at Westlake, students must be at least 17 years old. For this drive, all blood donors had to weigh at least 123 pounds. In the past instances, donors only had to weigh 110 pounds. Consequently, there were fewer donors than most drives.
For some this sort of event was a piece of cake. For others it was harder and a little scary, especially for the first-time donors.
“It was my first time doing a blood drive,” donor junior Katie Powers said. “I was kind of scared.”
There is still one more blood drive in the future, though the date has not been scheduled. It will be the final drive this year.
