On May 13-14, the boys varsity golf team made school history by taking first place in the State Tournament for the second consecutive year.
“Overall, I think the team has done an outstanding job this year,” junior Brenden Redfern said. “We’ve really worked hard and that hard work paid off with a second straight State Championship.”
As he finished his final round, senior Alex Ellis remembers coach Callan Nokes’s face vividly.
“I was walking up to the green and I stopped to talk to Coach Nokes,” Alex said. “I’ve never seen him so happy in my life. Then one of my buddies told me we were up by 23 strokes, so I figured we had clinched it.”
Parting seniors want this new-found tradition to continue. Many offer their words of wisdom to the other team members.
“To the underclassmen,” senior Paul Otte said, “I would work more on your short game.”
Southlake Carroll finished second under Westlake by 14 shots.
Scores: (18 Hole, 9 Hole)
Paul Otte – Third in State 70, 34
Alex Ellis – Tied for fifth in State 71, 35
Daniel Northington – Tied for fifth in State 71, 35
Stratton Nolen 76, 35
Brenden Redfern 77, 36
