Gourdoughs
“Big. Fat. Donuts.”
This is not a stretch for the doughnuts at Gourdoughs. Even calling them doughnuts is almost inaccurate. The $3.25 desserts here are more like heavenly meals. Served made-to-order and with many eclectic, even brow-raising varieties, Gourdoughs is no doubt the most unique doughnut place in Austin. These interesting flavors include Miss Shortcake, Razzle Dazzle and the Flying Pig which is topped with bacon and maple syrup icing.
The Flying Pig is not the only meaty menu option, with the Mother Clucker including fried chicken strips and honey butter on top of a fresh fried doughnut and Porkey’s which features a Canadian bacon topping. When you order it, the doughnut is first deep fried and then the toppings are added. The final product tastes like a funnel cake/doughnut to the extreme. The large variety of toppings range from habanero pepper jelly to yellow cake batter, with just about everything in between.
This doughnut palace quaintly serves out of a trailer parked on 1219 South Lamar just past the Alamo Drafthouse, conveniently next to other trailer food hot spots including The Odd Duck and a drive-through coffee shop. There is a pleasant atmosphere with picnic tables and plenty of seating for your whole party, and on a nice day, it is a great place to hang out.
If you’re looking for a delightful dessert after school or have a late-night doughnut craving (open Friday and Saturday until 3 a.m.), Gourdoughs will certainly give you your fill and then some.
